The Impact of Village Funds on Rural Welfare in Indonesia 2023The SMERU Research Institute
Researchers utilized advanced econometric techniques, including Regression Discontinuity in Time (RDiT) and Difference-in-Difference (DiD), to evaluate the causal effects of the national Village Fund (Dana Desa) program. The study used nighttime light (NTL) intensity as a proxy for rural economic welfare across approximately 75,000 villages.
The analysis revealed that the Village Fund positively impacted rural welfare, with average light intensity increasing by 97% post-implementation. It provided evidence of regional convergence, showing that underdeveloped villages in East Indonesia grew significantly faster (156%) than those in the West.
